What can I expect in Treatment?
This is a common question from someone who is struggling with addiction. What does treatment entail? How does it work? How long does treatment continue? …..and many other questions. First of all, whether discussing inpatient or outpatient treatment, the goal of treatment is recovery. And the first step in treatment is to gather a complete assessment so a sound treatment plan can be developed. If it appears the problems are manageable as an outpatient, treatment is done through the office. Sometimes the nature of the illness is more severe and inpatient treatment may be the best first step. This can often be determined after the initial assessment. If the inpatient course is recommended, you will be referred to a treatment facility that is appropriate for your needs. Length of treatment depends on the nature of the problems but is long enough to make sure that a sound treatment program is in place and functioning. Both inpatient and outpatient treatment involve medication, counseling that is individual and in group and a focus on lifestyle issues that help to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle. Outpatient therapy is done through the office and office visits are on a periodic basis – typically monthly after treatment is established. The cost of inpatient and out patient treatment is based on the individual insurance plan. Each insurance plan provides specific payment benefits. It is important to judge the cost of treatment against the costs of not treating the addiction – monetary and non-monetary costs. In the grand scheme of things it is far costlier to continue in the addiction than enter in recovery.
Community based 12 step program are available without charge and certainly can effectively treat substance use disorders. The key to developing a program that works is not just attending meetings but working the steps with a sponsor. Many people have entered and maintained recovery just by participating in 12 step programs. But the key to success is active participation and developing a lifestyle of rigorous honesty.
